TUESDAY’S TIP * SMELL GOOD FRIDGE

LAVENDER

Our fridge is a bit embarrassing, and I really wish someone would come over and clean it for me, but until then I thought I would try to make it smell a little better. I found this tip over on Gardenista, and whipped it up last night. I happened to have some dried rosemary around, [...]

TUESDAY’S TIP * EXTENDING THE LIFE OF BASIL

FRESHBASIL

Next time you pick up carton of basil or clip some from the yard, treat it just as you would fresh flowers by cutting the stems and placing them in a glass of water. Cover the basil lightly with a plastic bag, and leave out on the counter. The basil doesn’t fair so well in [...]

BRUNCH BITES * BAKED EGGS IN PURGATORY

baked eggs

I came across Mexican Eggs in Purgatory in the latest issue of Food and Wine magazine, and just so happened to have most of the ingredients on hand. I followed the basic directions, only as usual I didn’t really measure anything, and instead went with a handful or a splash. My blended mix was maybe [...]

EATING STANDING UP

Photo Feb 15, 9 09 28 AM

Many of my favorite meals have been eaten while standing in the kitchen grazing over a plate of meat and cheese, and that’s what Geoff and I did for Valentine’s Day. I arrived home to much more than expected, and wanted to share the local shops where Geoff picked up the goods. Spotted Trotter meats [...]

CHERRY CHOMPER

cherry chomper

This weekend I used my Cherry Chomper Cherry Pitter, and not only is it adorable, but quite functional too. Perfect for pitting a batch for snacking or muddling into a cocktail. Now that I can easily pit cherries I want to look in to some boozy cherry recipes. If you are attempting something larger like [...]

If you like to preserve or pickle you’ll want to check out Marisa’s blog, Food in Jars. It’s a great resource for recipes (not just canning ones), tips, new products, and giveaways! She also has a book – Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round that I pick up often. I am thrilled to have [...]

IN THE KITCHEN * HOMEMADE GIFTS

There’s still time to whip up a few homemade goodies for gifting. I got together with a couple of friends, and we canned some Dixie Relish and Pear & Ginger preserves. We also made Ginger Vodka, and Rosemary + Lemon Sea Salts, and had cute jars, ribbon, tags, bells and custom stamps for packaging!

APP ADDICT & MANIC LIST KEEPER

There are at least 5 apps on my phone for organization, and I can’t seem to find one that’s just right. I’d probably be more organized if I stopped looking for apps to GET organized. Anywho! I’ve been using the Anylist app for organizing my grocery list, and it allows me to easily add items [...]

IN THE KITCHEN * QUINOA FRIED RICE

Quinoa Fried Rice Recipe

This week I came across a recipe on Steamy Kitchen for Quinoa Fried ‘Rice’. It’s the perfect dish for using up leftover quinoa from an earlier dinner, and I’ll definitely make it again. I followed the  basic recipe, but added in fresh sugar snap peas in place of the frozen peas, and next time I [...]

IN THE KITCHEN * LIL BABY LASAGNA

lasagna

These were super easy and a party hit. I only hope you can follow my lousy directions… Preheat oven to 375 Brown beef  with garlic and italian seasonings. Add half a jar of tomato sauce or homemade if you’ve got it like that. In a separate bowl mix ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella and shredded parmesan [...]
