LISTEN UP * LET’S CHAT

afterthejump

Some weeks are tougher than others, no? This past week I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed, and a little behind. It started with a website crash, and a long list of to-dos.  Working full-time, trying to run/grow a business on the side, and attempting to learn new things doesn’t leave much time for actually creating. Not to mention making time for fun with friends or a moment to stand still and take in your surroundings. Sometimes it’s hard to find a happy medium between work and play. I tend to shut down when the inbox gets too full and the to-do list too long, but avoiding the work doesn’t lead to a stress free me. Grace Bonney’s podcast on After the Jump last week struck a chord with the way I’m currently feeling. It was inspiring, and I’m going to implement some of the practices into my routine.

What I took away from the episode:

1. Take 20 min for you. Before bed and first thing when waking up. I’m going to try to let my mind rest and do something just for me. Rather it be a dog walk, a favorite magazine, or just coffee on the front porch rather than the computer.

2. Focus on the Present. Put some things down, and focus on one project in front of you. Be Present. Give the one thing you are working on all your attention. I definitely work on 5 projects at once, and could see how this helps you to move forward. Tackling one thing makes me feel better, and pulls me back to productive mode, so I can keep moving ahead.

3. Reminders! I have Remember The Milk currently for my more long-term goals and to-do list. My latest phone reminder app is called Today, and it let’s you focus on the immediate task at hand. It’s straight forward and simple with check boxes for once a task is completed. At the end of the day you can push the task to the next day or save it for later. I’m also using Gmail calendar to add due dates of each project I’m working on, and that’s helping me focus on where I should spend my time. There are a zillion of these apps, and I’m constantly trying to find the perfect fit.

4. Slow Down. Emails don’t have to be answered within the hour. Be firm with your timeline, and stick to your guns. Be realistic about what I can get done today, and don’t stress about what’s due in the future. Time with friends is important, time for you is important, it can’t all be done at once. Make time for creating, and experiencing.

5. Schedule. Work hours need to be set. Stop working at a certain time. This is a little tricky for me since I have a day job. For me work hours are 7am to 9am or 8pm to 11pm so I need to really schedule my time to maximize my day.

Juggling your day job, side job, making time for friends, boyfriends, beautifying your home, and taking care of yourself can make for a pretty full schedule. Do you have any tips or tricks for keeping life organized, and making time for you?

FOG LINEN

FOGLINEN

When I passed the Fog Linen booth It was all I could do to control myself. I’m linen obsessed these days, and here were beautiful Japanese linen textiles. Squeal. Where’s my credit card. I scooped up a couple of scarves and an apron that I haven’t worn yet for fear of getting it dirty. Currently you can order on their website, and the best part is they ship First Class within the US for  free!

A NEW YORK RECAP: WHAT TO EAT

If you’re following along on instagram you may have already seen what I ate and did in New York a couple of weeks ago, but I like to do a recap to keep track of where and what. From time to time a friend will ask for suggestions, and I like how the blog let’s me easily link with a few things to see and do.

PRUNE 1 Prune

First up is Prune – It’s currently my favorite spot, and it seems that Chef Gabrielle Hamilton has thought of everything. For me the place is perfect.  The decor, the glasses, the pink menus, the food. I’m in love.

The Dutch Brunch The Dutch Chicken

The Dutch for Brunch – A friend recommended this spot, and I don’t often get to do brunch while in NYC, but this time I made an effort. There was lots of comfy seating, and we had a great meal. Hot chicken with honey biscuits and a fancy fried bologna sandwich.

We spent a couple of evenings at the Ace Hotel having drinks, and dinner at the John Dory Oyster Bar. Another pretty perfect spot. Delicious drinks, food, and an Opening Ceremony and Project No.8 store attached for shopping.

Red Farm

Red Farm was another TOP meal. A farm to table vibe serving up Chinese food with a twist. We had dumplings, pork buns and a Katz Deli pastrami egg roll (WHAT) that I’ll be dreaming of for a while. I mean, don’t sleep on this. Go.

The last night was spent meeting up with friends for a casual dinner at B Bar. A roomy booth in a relaxing environment where we could hear each other talk. This was a Wednesday night, and from what I hear it get’s a little more happening in the summer and on weekends. It was just right on this particular night however, and around the corner from a stop at Verameat to see a friend and pick up some jewelry of course.

Verameat

Oh, and of course a visit to Eataly with all of its beautiful food that you’ll wish you could stuff in your suitcase and travel home with. A quick fresh pasta meal and glass of Rose´ before heading home.

EATING STANDING UP

Many of my favorite meals have been eaten while standing in the kitchen grazing over a plate of meat and cheese, and that’s what Geoff and I did for Valentine’s Day. I arrived home to much more than expected, and wanted to share the local shops where Geoff picked up the goods.

CHERRY CHOMPER

This weekend I used my Cherry Chomper Cherry Pitter, and not only is it adorable, but quite functional too. Perfect for pitting a batch for snacking or muddling into a cocktail. Now that I can easily pit cherries I want to look in to some boozy cherry recipes.

If you are attempting something larger like a delicious cherry pie, you may want to look into the Cherrymat Cherrystone Remover. I haven’t used it, but it looks promising.

THE MEAL 2013

One moment. One meal. One photograph. Let’s eat.  The Meal Project is coming up on February 22nd! The idea is to virtually bring people around the globe together and raise awareness about world hunger. It’s easy to participate by simply snapping a photo of yourself and your meal at 12pm EST, and then tweet it @arthouse or email them at themeal@sketchbookproject.com.

You will more than likely be instagraming your meals that day anyway, so this time don’t forget to hashtag them with #themeal , and send them in!

themealproject

“These simultaneous snapshots – self-portraits of people and their foods – will then be tweeted and posted online for the world to share. Our aim is to inspire a feeling of community across geographic and cultural boundaries. So wherever you may be on February 22nd at 12pm, keep your camera handy and something delicious nearby – and remember that thousands of strangers, both near and far, are sharing that meal with you”
